Abstract

The Four Gospels (literary tradition) [http://syriaca.org/work/9645] are extant in Syriac in at least three different translations. The earliest surviving translation of the separated Gospels (in contrast to the Diatessaron [http://syriaca.org/work/10537] , a Gospel-harmony) is The Four Gospels (Old Syriac version) [http://syriaca.org/work/9512] , likely translated in the mid-3rd century. This was followed by The Four Gospels (Peshitta version) [http://syriaca.org/work/71] (translated early 5th century), and The Four Gospels (Harqlean version) [http://syriaca.org/work/161] (early 7th century). The latter was a revision of the Gospels from The New Testament (Philoxenian version) [http://syriaca.org/work/10536] , which survive only in quotations from Philoxenos of Mabbug.1
