Abstract

The Four Gospels (Harqlean version) are a translation of The Four Gospels (literary tradition) made by Thomas of Harqel in 615 or 616, perhaps as a revision of the New Testament (Philoxenian version) . They imitate the Greek text closely and provide variant readings using symbols and marginal notes modeled after Origen's Hexaplaric Septuagint. Multiple revisions included efforts to bring them into alignment with the Byzantine text and a 12th-century revision by Dionysios bar Salibi. The Four Gospels (Harqlean version) are extant in abundant manuscript witnesses, beginning in the 8th century.15
