Abstract

The Four Gospels (Peshitta version) [http://syriaca.org/work/71] are a group of texts translating the canonical Gospels from Greek, beginning in the early 5th century and appearing in extant manuscripts as early as the 5th or 6th century. They came to largely replace earlier translations, the Diatessaron [http://syriaca.org/work/10537] and The Four Gospels (Old Syriac version) [http://syriaca.org/work/9512] but retained some of the unique features of those versions. Their exact relationship to these earlier versions is still a matter of debate, as is the uniformity of the texts themselves. They generally reflect the Greek more closely than The Four Gospels (Old Syriac version) [http://syriaca.org/work/9512] do.98, 99, 100
