Prologue

"On nous a réclamé de raconter l’histoire des amis du Christ, et nous n’avons pas assez de force pour nous acquitter de ce qui nous a été réclamé, car la petitesse est notre mesure…"1 "ܬܫܥܝܬܐ ܕܪ̈ܚܡܘܗܝ ܕܡܫܝܚܐ ܐܬܬܒܥܢܢ ܠܡܫܬܥܝܘ. ܘܠܝܬ ܒܢ ܚܝܠܐ ܕܣܦܩ ܠܡܡܠܝܘ ܦܘܪܥܢܐ ܡܕܡ ܕܐܬܬܒܥܢܢ. ܕܠܡ ܗܿܝ ܕܙܥܘܪܐ ܡܫܘܚܬܢ:"1 "It was demanded that we tell the story of the friends of Christ, and we do not have the power to fulfill this request sufficiently, for the smallness is our measure . . ."1

"ܘܟܕ ܓܝܪ ܒܣ̣ܐ ܒܪܢܫܢ ܩܕܡܝܐ: ܘܥ̣ܒܪ ܥܠ ܦܘܩܕܢܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ: ܘܐܬܓܠܙ ܡܢ ܗܢܿܘܢ ܛܘ̈ܒܐ ܡܫܒܚ̈ܐ."1 "Quand en effet notre premier homme eut avec mépris agi contre le commandement de Dieu et qu’il eut été privé de ces biens glorieux…"1 "For when the first man disdained and acted against the commandment of God, and was deprived of glorious things . . ."1
