Notes

In hagiography: Māqārīs (Macarius) the Elder was an ascetic who came into the Syriac tradition via ʿEnanishoʿ's Syriac translation of the Paradise of the Fathers [http://syriaca.org/work/403] by Palladius.
The identity of the multiple ascetic authors and saints named Macarius has been a source of confusion, both in the medieval Syriac traditions and in present scholarship.10
