An oasis city of the Turfan Basin, capital of the ancient kingdom of Gaochang, later incorporated into Tang China, in modern-day Xinjiang. It functioned as a major Silk Road hub linking China with Central Asia and became a center of Uyghur political and cultural life after the Tang withdrawal. Turfan housed the Christian monastery at Bulayïq during the West Uyghur era, where manuscripts such as Old Uyghur text U5329 from the Berlin Turfan collection attest to a vibrant Church of the East presence.8
