An early Silk Road kingdom on the northeastern edge of the Tarim Basin, flourishing during the Han dynasty, later abandoned due to desertification and water diversion. It played a crucial strategic role in opening and securing overland trade routes between China and Central Asia after Han conquest in the first century BCE. Loulan’s incorporation into Han imperial networks helped establish the long-distance trade corridors that would later carry East Syriac merchants and missionaries into the Tarim Basin.3
