He became friends with Paul of Edessa, his workman, who was actually a Latin bishop in disguise. The two lived a life of prayer and spiritual companionship. They travelled to Sinai. Back in Edessa, they interacted with Matthew the eunuch, a woman hiding in a monastery. They travelled to Jerusalem. Paul performed miracles and fled to Nisibis. John found him there, and Paul told him to return to Edessa. Paul died, and John died 8 months later. The story was set in the time of the Bishop Rabbula of Edessa. John of Edessa is commemorated in Paul the bishop and John the priest (text). Bibliotheca Hagiographica Syriaca 960 Saints Syriaques JEAN ET PAUL, D'EDESSE 255 BHG 1476 S.P. Brock, V. Ruggieri and L.
