Bp. of Edessa (ca. 684–9, 708) and scholar.
In hagiography: Jacob of Edessa was commemorated as one of the greatest Syrian orthodox scholars and biblical commentators. He joined the monastery of Qenneshre , and he studied in Alexandria and Edessa . After he became Bishop of Edessa , he retired with two students to teach Greek at the convent of Eusebona , and then he wrote commentaries on scripture. He died at the monastery of Tell ʿAda .
