Perhaps the possibilities for the future of inter-religious dialogue lie as much with past precedents and their potential to bring new perspectives to the present. First of all, it is worth acknowledging that the current enterprise of inter-religious dialogue in the academy has developed in the modern West, alongside growing religious diversity. However, we have have alternative models of religious exchange outside of our immediate experience and the history of Europe, models that form the earliest history of encounter and response to the religious other, and which emerged among Eastern Christians and Muslims in the Near East. The initial responses were mainly that of apologetics and polemics, but there also developed more dialogical approaches. In particular, we see the connection in the medieval period between intra-religious dialogue and inter-religious dialogue; the openness towards one allows for the possibility of the other.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
