Celui-ci cherchait à faire de Théophile un rival de Frumentius, envoyé à Aksoum par Athanase. En l'envoyant chez les Himyarites, il cherchait en même temps à les gagner à l'arianisme et à casser le monopole des marins d'Alexandrie. Pour Théophile comme pour Frumentius, la mission d'Aksoum fut un fiasco.
