On the West-Syrian side, the new ecumenical climate developed by some of their theologians such as al-Arfadi offers a partial explanation, though this does not hold true for Bar Ṣalibi, whose pro-crusader sentiments were probably politically motivated. In the case of the East-Syrians, strategic reasons, more than ecumenical ones, explain why they adopted a neutral and sometimes even benevolent tone, when addressing themselves to the crusaders, though they remain convinced of the superiority of their own Christological beliefs.
