Baldwin was adopted by the Armenian Thoros, a nominally Byzantine governor, and was appointed his coruler and successor. In March 1098 Thoros was murdered in a popular uprising inspired by members of the city council, and Baldwin became ruler of Edessa. Based on Latin, Armenian, and Syriac sources, this article is aimed at answering the question of whether Baldwin was involved in the murder of Thoros. There are two points to note. First, no one chronicler, except Michael the Syrian whose report is contradictory, accuses Baldwin in Thoros’ death. Second, Baldwin swore a solemn oath to permit Thoros to retire to Melitene; and, moreover, Baldwin and Thoros were bound by adoptive ties of kinship. Taking this into account, it may be assumed that Baldwin did not wish to assassinate Thoros, his adoptive father, because if he did so, he would be divinely punished as oathbreaker and patricida (person who murders his own father).
