Although some of the arguments used seem to be in danger of being circular, I would certainly agree with this general conclusion, and simply add that, where OT quotations are preserved in the Syriac Diatessaron tradition (which is lamentably rare), these tend to be entirely adapted to the Peshitta OT, whereas in C and S some modification is usually made towards the Greek form of the quotation in the NT, and in the Peshitta NT the Greek is followed closely: such a situation must mean that the Diatessaron preceeds the Old Syriac, and not vice versa. Black also discusses the date of the Old Syriac Gospels (a comparatively late one is preferred), and the lost Old Syriac to the Acts and Epistles. The other Syriac versions are treated much more briefly (pp. 139-42), and the three paragraphs on the 'Palestinian Syriac' curiously ignore Perrot's important publication of the Khirbet Mird Acts fragment (Revue Biblique, 1963).
