His <i>Letter on climates</i> is addressed to Basil, a priest on the island of Cyprus. In the first part of this letter—edited, translated and commented on here for the first time—Severus Sebokht explains what climates are and how to calculate the position of the different circles of the celestial sphere. This text shows how the scientific legacy of the Alexandrian astronomer Claudius Ptolemy was received in Syriac-speaking scholarly circles from the 7th century onwards. While drawing inspiration from Ptolemy and from his own <i>Treatise on the constellations</i>, Severus Sebokht offered his correspondent an original account of geography and astronomy. The second part of this letter, which contains new information on the astrolabe, has been edited, translated and commented on by Émilie Villey in a separate contribution.
