illud: "Quia pater maior me est"" (Ioh. 14, 28) ("uersio
syriaca")] is an attack on the Arians. These heretics asserted on the basis
of such Texts as John, 14,28. : "My Father is greated than I", that
Christ is manifestly inferior to the Father. Amphilochius energetically combats
their position. In the first part of his sermon he shows on logical and
philosophical grounds that it is impossible for a man rightly to maintain that
God the Son is less than the Father, such an assertion being a derogation of the
Father's honour and not simply an attack on the Son. [...] The second part
of the discourse is devoted to a refutation of the Arian position from
Scripture. In this section we have inter alia, a detailed exposition of John,
14, 23-15, 1." Three biblical passages quoted in the Homily: Samuel I, 9,2
                    ; Wisdom 1,7; Ephesians 2,14.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
