R. James (and reconstructed from the Latin Infancy Gospel – the so-called J Compilation as well as two medieval Irish adaptations), occupies a central position between the Protevangelium Jacobi and the Gospel of Ps.-Matthew. This Special Source (or its Greek model) was connected to a place of pilgrimage: the Kathisma. There a church was constructed in the aftermath of the Council of Chalcedon (451) to propagate its dyophysite doctrine and the concept of the Theotokos, next to the cavern where Jesus was born, according to the Protevangelium, and the rock in the form of a chair on which the Virgin would have rested while giving birth or, according to a later version, during her journey to Egypt. Some of the themes to be found only in the Special Source were derived from a tradition about the Magi that is contained in the Opus imperfectum and the Syriac Chronicle of Ps. Dionysius of Tell Mahre. However, their heterodox, gnostic and angelic Christological views were adjusted to serve the new Chalcedonian doctrine about the Incarnation, held by the Orthodox and Catholic Churches: the divine child contained in the star was transformed from a Docetic apparition into the divine nature of Christ about to be incarnated. As such, the miraculous story of the birth of Jesus in a cave would find its way into the Latin tradition, where the Special Source and Ps.-Matthew were to become more popular than the Protevangelium Jacobi.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
