It seems possible to identify a conceptual unity in these three questions, in relation to the theoretical issues discussed; a chronological unity, which is achieved in the altogether similar unfolding of the controversies; and finally a unity with regard to the actors involved and their strategies of confrontation. Under this respect, the use of biblical references is of particular importance because of the fundamental role they played in the argumentation of missionaries, canonists and consultors of the Holy Office. By analysing a particularly significant example, the episode of Naaman the Syrian (2 R 5,17-19), the article illustrates the interweaving and overlapping of questions arising from missions distant in time and space.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
