It starts by contrasting two known positions. The first one, represented by a tradition mentioned by Brightman, considers the Liturgy of James as being the origin of the Liturgies of Saint Basil and Saint John Chrysostom. The present state of research allows us to define better this tradition, which could hardly be older than the 10th century. The second position constitutes the subject of a recent book by F. R. K. Fenwick. In spite of the interest of a systematic comparison between the Liturgies of Basil and James, one has to be careful before jumping to hasty conclusions on the question of either the syrianization or egyptianization of the Palestinian rite. The second part of the study limits itsel to the Melkite tradition, which is the main witness of the Palestinian history of James, although the Syriac tradition also has its origin in Jerusalem. The emphasis is put on the richness and the diversity of the Palestinian tradition from its very beginnings. The article also opens new ways for the studying what could be called the Jewish character of the Christian liturgy."
