In his theological writings, Theodoret criticizes the profane culture, but he abundantly corresponds with scholastikoi (experts of laws), scholars and even pagans. The letters exchanged with laymen indeed confirm the tendency of his correspondence with ecclesiastics: Theodoret’s circle first runs to the civil diocese of Orient, coinciding with the patriarchate of Antioch. But the bishop of Cyrrhus keeps up a political network in the whole Eastern Roman Empire and in particular in its capital, Constantinople: he exchanges letters with all rank functionaries, up to the court elite. He submits religious questions to lots of civil functionaries. On the contrary, protagonists of the Nestorian crisis are called upon about various, eventually profane, themes. The letters of Theodoret of Cyrrhus little criticize the civil functionaries, even concerning fiscal system. When he defends his faith in front of laymen, he did so only during the period of his exile.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
