Эканоміка. Права3201445-50This article examines the establishment of the county of Edessa, the first of the Crusader states created in Outremer. The author aims at answering the following questions: Why did Baldwin of Boulogne, the first Frankish ruler of Edessa, adopt the title of count and how did he legitimize his new status? It should be noted that in the beginning of the First Crusade (1096–1099) Baldwin of Boulogne acted as a representative of his elder brother Godfrey of Bouillon. In February 1098 he arrived at Edessa being invited there by Thoros, the Armenian ruler of the city, and the city council. Baldwin was legally adopted by Thosors and became his co-ruler and successor. Then, after the uprising in Edessa in March 1098 and the murder of Thoros, Baldwin became duke and lord of the city. He was in complete power by the end of 1098, destroying the council of Edessa, and established the county of Edessa between the end of 1098 and November 1098. The author highlights two leading factors in the establishing the county. The first one is the title of count (comes) which Baldwin brought from Western Europe where he was count of Verdun on the eve of the First Crusade. The second one is the adoption of Baldwin by Thoros, the Armenian ruler of Edessa. These factors legitimized Baldwin’s authority in the county and granted the status of an independent principality (dominium) to the newly created state.
