Around the same time, they were incorporated into the Church’s liturgical life and read aloud during Great Lent. Modern scholars place these writings under the name of “Ephrem graecus” (the “Greek Ephrem”), though they are not the work of a single author and were not composed at the same time. Among these writings are various prayers, and this article studies a group of eleven prayers addressed to the Theotokos. After a consideration of their theological themes and content, about half the prayers are restored to their original authors and/or provided with a <i>terminus post quem</i>. The manuscript tradition and the earliest printed editions transmitting these prayers are also considered.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
