Indeed, the nine excavations carried out under the direction of the DGAM between 1998 and 2009, led to the partial discovery of an early Byzantine settlement. The remains, scattered over an area of 11,400 m², consist mainly of a large basilica decorated with geometric mosaics, sewers and basins connected to a cistern, a large agricultural complex and ancillary rooms. A wall of a considerable size flanks the eastern side of the site, thus implying that the site was protected by a wall.
Further surveys will be needed before we can portray a full picture of the complex and its contents. In the meantime, the available data serve as the source material of my PhD thesis. This article provides a general overview of the components and materials found on this site, and attempts to give an idea as to its function.
