A decisive element may have been the staging of the place as the site of the martyrdom of Saint Sergios. The comparison of the archaeological fi ndings with contemporary sources and the life of the saint suggests that this staging may have been initiated by the local clergy, and may have been based on successful models such as Jerusalem. The erection of a monumental sacred topography and the creation of a compatible hagiographic legend went hand in hand and provided not only the place but also its ecclesiastical elites with supraregional validity.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
