He takes into consideration the twofold direction of this communion. First, the relation of the See of Antioch with its suffragant Churches: this relation can be conceived in terms of heritage, in the meaning that the Churches depending on Antioch receive from the Mother Church the heritage of the Apostolic Faith. Secondly, with the other patriarchal Sees of the Empire, in particular – after the break with the Ancient and the New Rome (Council of Chalcedon) – with the See of Alexandria, the Church of Antioch, which considers herself as the spiritual heir of Jerusalem, maintains a covenant relation, even if the history of this covenant was not always serene. This covenant in faith and against external dangers, which does not need any form of primacy of any of the patriarchal sees, could be what the Churches, in search of communion, are called to adopt today in order to render common witness.
