In late Antiquity, the expansion of the Roman Empire and the improvement of travelling conditions led to the increasing number of travellers. In Syria, official structures of welcoming (within the framework of cursus publicus and military hospitium) coexisted with inns to be found in a private setting in terms of the Greek codified ideal of xenia. Yet, these « traditional » structures of welcoming soon competed with the emergence and development of Christian structures, mainly monastic, in Syria. But how far does the christianisation of mentalities necessarily imply a deep modification of cultural practices of welcoming and a total change in the material structures of these passing places? This paper deals with passing places in the light of Syriac apocryphal and hagiographic literature, the increase of which was unprecedented from the 3rd to the 6th century. These sources prove to be extremely rich in order to establish a typology of passing places in late Antiquity in Syria and to study the construction and the evolution of the topoi related to those structures of welcoming. Moreover, the Syriac documents greatly complement Greek sources and make it possible for us to examine, from a different point of view, territorial and socio-cultural dynamics at work in Syria, a multicultural and multiconfessional area in the Eastern Roman Empire.
