Zayd – the “Christian” poet of al-Ḥīra – and his family were produced. We compare the account of ʿAdī’s life found in the <i>Kitāb al-Aġānī</i> with other late antique and medieval historiographical traditions, and analyse it using methods of textual and literary criticism. The results of our analysis lend support to the hypothesis that stories about the poet could have been developed in al-Ḥīra, between 602 and 633 AD, in order to assert the legitimacy of the Banū Ayyūb family, striving to dominate the city. This survey demonstrates the value of the <i>Kitāb al-Aġānī</i> as a witness to the development and transmission of historiographical lore between Christian and Muslim communities of Mesopotamia during the first centuries of Islam.
