The doctrine of Christ’s unique operation and will—allegedly concocted by the emperor Heraclius and the patriarch Sergius of Constantinople—not only failed its purpose to win the Miaphysites back into the imperial Church, but split the Chalcedonians as well, and caused a dispute which was more political than genuinely theological. Eventually banned by the Sixth Ecumenical Council, it quickly vanished without leaving remarkable traces in history. This simplistic reconstruction has been challenged lately, thanks also to the greater attention scholars have been paying to non-Greek sources. After a brief review of recent relevant studies, this paper guides the reader through the “Syriac side” of the controversy. The Syriac sources related to the dispute are presented, and the new insight they provide is highlighted: they prove that the debate about Christ’s will and operation was, from the theological point of view, not an artificial nor an ephemeral one, and that it remained relevant for Chalcedonians Christians in the Eastern provinces of the empire long after these fell under Muslim rule.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
