Серия III: Филология4 [22]201044-53The article deals with the Syriac witnesses of the beginnings of the so-called «messalian» movement in the Syriac world in IVth c. It is believed that Theodoret and Epiphanius’s accusation of the ‘praying heretics’ stay on solid ground of the Syriac data. The attentive analysis however prove that Syriac sources (mar Aphrem, Aphrahat, Life of Rabbula and Aksenoyo) contain contradictory evidence and could in no sense be considered as witnessing to the existence of the false teaching of the ‘praying heretics’ in the Syriac church. The absence of a concrete teaching in the early sources was counterbalanced with the moral and disciplinary accusations of a disordered life, staying with women, vagabondage etc.). Later Byzantine heresiologists formulated the ‘messalian heresy’ reconstructing it from scarce and vague data from the early sources. The text evidence corroborates conclusions of M. Kmosko and A. Guillaumont about the absence of any specific ‘messalian’ teaching. They were probably representatives of some form of the early Syriac ascetic movement mistaken for the dangerous and perverse heretics in the Greek-speaking community.
