The communities included many types of Oriental Christians: Armenians, Georgians, Nestorians, etc. In the Lusignan period (1192-1474), these communities drew benefit from their position as intermediaries in the commerce of the Levant and maintained their churches, their customs and an administrative independence in their internal affairs, with the sole condition that they recognize the spiritual power of the Latin Archbishop of Nicosia. The Venetian administration (1474-1570) did not change the status of these minorities, which nevertheless tended more and more to be assimilated with the Latins but also with the Greeks. During the Ottoman period (1570-1878) the Christian communities lost their protectors and disappeared, only the Maronites resisted the assimilation imposed by the Turks and the Greeks, at the price of an important loss of their powers. The Armenians and the Jews maintained their presence on the island with the arrival of small groups of immigrants which renewed the existing communities. By 1878, the cosmopolitan culture of the medieval cities was only a confused memory.
