One may distinguish seven categories of baptisteries, from the mere equipped sacristies to the independent buildings and monumental baptisteries associated with pilgrimage churches. However, the presence of reliquaries in all of them sheds light on the close relation established in proto-byzantine Syria between the devices of baptism and the cult of holy men and martyrs.
