The Syriac Church used two ways to spread the Gospels: Tatianus' <i>Diatessaron </i>(175 a. C.), and the <i>Mepharreshe</i>, that is the Separated Gospels, handed down by two manuscripts, the <i>Curetonian </i>and the <i>Syrosinaiticus</i>, dated IV-V century. In the most diffused present opinion the two manuscripts can be two different recensions of the Old Syriac version. The <i>Syrosinaiticus </i>seems to be the oldest witness in spite of a long transmission process. The Old Syriac version is generally considered later and partly depending on the <i>Diatessaron</i>; it can go back to the early III century even if some questions are still unsolved. Such a version shows some traces of expressions deriving from various authors differently and it is the subject of one of the most interesting debates about the origins of Christianity.
