His remote place of abode continued to fascinate his followers, even after he had passed away.
In this paper, archaeological fi ndings – unpublished until now – are linked for the first time with the traditional textual sources, illuminating various aspects of the pilgrim’s journey to a revered hermit.
The investigation of this type of pilgrimage as well as the archaeological examination of the rock hermitages or rock monasteries not only extends our cognisance of pilgrimages but also our knowledge of such minor Christian places of pilgrimage in Syria. It turns out that, in former times, the local and regional pilgrimage sites of Syria, in addition to the large pilgrim centres, played an important role in the piety and also the spiritual life of Syria’s Christians.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
