This paper provides a presentation of the relations between categories and metaphysics according to the Baghdadian aristotelians. Against the contemporary grammarians, the school of Baghdad have proposed a metaphysical interpretation of the categories. In his theological tractates, Yaḥyâ ibn 'Adî discovers a multiplicity of "things" (ashyâ) and of "intentions" (ma'ânî) in a single "substance" (jawhar). Al-Fârâbî uses too these two concepts when he establishes, in his Kitâb al-hurûfi a metaphysics based on the categories. In this way, metaphysics deals not only with beings, but also with "things", which are things thought.
