He rejects the idea that God may have required such a practice. His opponent, Simon Magus, is accused of drawing his powers from a ritual combining necromancy and infanticide. Given that the Pseudo-Clementines were written at the same time that a ritualistic trend was developing within Neoplatonism, the hypothesis put forward in this paper is to say that the accusation of magic against Simon is actually an attack on Iamblichus’ theurgic rituals. Incidentally we find the same confusion made on purpose between necromancy, infanticide and theurgy in Gregory of Nazianzus’ accusations against the Emperor Julian.
