Although there is little archaeological evidence of this cult of Christian martyrs in the lands of the Sasanian Empire, historians can nevertheless rely on literature, particularly the Acts of the Persian Martyrs to identify the concrete forms that this cult may have taken in the past. While ecclesiastical and administrative geography has long been of interest to scholars, based on the hagiography of the Persian martyrs, this paper considers the same corpus to measure the geographic evolution of the cult of Christian martyrs across the Persian territories, before and after the Arab-Islamic conquest. Thus, the mental geography of the places held dear by the authors reveals the evolution of the Christian community until the beginning of the Abbasid period. Rural areas and isolated regions seem to have become increasingly valued in the narratives, which can be explained by the spread of Persian monasticism, and perhaps also by the gradual withdrawal of the Christian population from the Mesopotamian plains.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
