In the first, the Chaldean priest ʿAbd al‑Aḥad describes the stages of his almost year‑long round trip (October 1707-June 1708) between his native Amid/Diyarbakır and the Holy Land. The second, shorter and more factual, gives the death toll from a plague in the Diyarbakır region in 1712. These accounts provide a wealth of demographic, historical, linguistic and toponymic information. But they are also of interest beyond their content, in that they have no equivalent in the pre-modern literary tradition of the Christians of Syria-Mesopotamia. This article aims to show that the two texts composed by ʿAbd al‑Aḥad are eloquent witnesses to developments taking place on both a literary and a codicological level. These developments occurred in the particular context of the 17th and 18th centuries, which saw the affirmation of Eastern Churches in communion with Rome. These two ‘personal’ narratives thus raise new questions about the role played respectively by confession and cultural practices in the way that history is recorded.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
