Deir al-Surian, Syr. 28A (6th–7th c.). The manuscript features a significant collection of excerpts taken from the Syriac translation of Theodoret’s Ecclesiastical History, as well as a few excerpts coming from Eusebius and Socrates’ Ecclesiastical Histories, and from Flavius Josephus’ Jewish War. With the exception of the latter, all these excerpts are so-far unedited and unstudied.
The present paper argues that these excerpts were carefully chosen and reshaped to fulfil a specific aim, i.e. showing through instructive examples how the Orthodox should resist and fight for their faith even at the cost of their lives, as well as how God always punished impious acts. Therefore, this collection contributes to the assessment of the originality of excerpting practices, and can help understand how such texts were used by the Miaphysite communities in their formative years.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
