Hardly any reliable information concerning this shift can be learnt from the scholarly literature, for it is almost entirely based on Codex Sachau 337, a late nineteenth century manuscript marred by numerous hyper-corrections, ghost-forms and non-Tyare dialectal forms and lexemes, which appear alongside some genuine Tyare forms. In light of the author’s research
with Tyare speakers, it is concluded that the sound change *† > š has initially occurred only after y or i, as a result of partial assimilation, and that it is found in all but four Tyare dialects located in the western and southwestern periphery of Tyare territory.
