Among the many doubts surrounding the text, one stands out in particular: its authenticity. The text presents itself as the transcription of a debate held in Constantinople by order of the emperors Justin and Justinian, in the year 527, which would make the <i>Disputationes </i>the only transcription of an authentic debate between Christians and Manichaeans in all preserved Greek literature. This is precisely the stance of the majority of the scholars who engaged with the work: it would correspond to the acts of a dispute that actually occurred. However, the text (which has not been analysed in detail yet) presents too many problems that do not corroborate its authenticity. With this contribution I hope to demonstrate that, conversely to what has been claimed by previous studies, the <i>Disputationes </i>of Paul the Persian appears to be a fictitious work, written at the time of Justinian I. The text reflects the revival of the anti-Manichaean literature of the time, which also coincided with the last great persecution of the Religion of Light in the Eastern Mediterranean, thus marking the extinction from the region (or, at least, a substantial disappearance thereof).
