Their original plan and monastic environment provide information on their function and spatial organization. In Iraq, the churches of ʿAyn Šāyʿa and of Tell V at al‑Ḥīra have only been partially excavated and provide little evidence of their use. The Gulf churches, explored more extensively, shed light on the practices in Lower Iraq. Comparisons with other better-known examples of churches, such as those of northern Syria, and with more recent churches attached to the Chaldean rite, are sometimes fruitful. Texts can also offer valuable insights. All of this data allows hypotheses to be formulated on the function of spaces and the liturgy, and seems to indicate that these churches very probably hosted a monastic liturgy and pilgrims.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
