A few saints, however, chose of their own account to experience the pain and rejection linked to the stench of infected wounds. Through this experience, they acquired compassion for human misery and patience in suffering. Doing this, they followed Job's model. The different Lives of Symeon Stylite the Elder show great variety when it comes to narrate the saint's stench, which is not the result of cultural differences between Latin, Greek and Syriac worlds, but rather a matter of personal choice on the part of the hagiographer.
