This title reflects the distinctive character of these compilations as collections of vocalized and diacritically marked sample texts of "words and readings" taken from the Syriac Bible and the writings of the Fathers. While past treatments of these manuscripts have focused only on biblical selections, this study explores the little-known patristic portions of these manuscripts. The first part of this study will introduce the reader to these smahe manuscripts and to the patristic collections in particular. The second part of this study is an examination of the word selections from patristic texts in Vat. syr. 152 (980 CE), the earliest smahe manuscript containing patristic collections. The third part of this study evaluates the validity of a suggested relationship between these patristic collections and the " Qarqapta Tradition." Detailed information about each of the 4,545 individual word selections from the works of Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil of Caesarea, and Severus of Antioch in Vat. syr. 152 can be found in the second volume. In sum, this study makes available, for the first time, an analysis and transcription of the patristic texts in one of these Syriac pedagogical compilations, providing evidence for the transmission and use of the Greek Fathers in the late-antique and early-Medieval periods.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
