A translation of this inscription is offered, for the first time, followed by a discussion of the city of Mārdīn and the nearby monastery of Dayr-al-Za‛farān, which was founded when institutional monasticism became widespread sometime after the fifth century. Despite the genocide of the Christians by the Ottomans during World War I, this venerable monastery was fortunately spared destruction. The final part of the paper offers a commentary on relics in Christianity and in the Syriac culture and on how the bones of the five patriarchs were worthy of being placed inside the sanctuary.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
