The Arabic-speaking patriarch remarked, “If one speaks of the Jews, it is also necessary to speak of the other non-Christian religions, and above all of the Muslims.” Thus did a voice from a church largely unknown in the west call attention to what Philip Jenkins has called the lost history of Christianity. But the history of the eastern churches, and particularly the history of those living among Muslims, is not lost. Rather, it faded from the memory, until recently when the large-scale persecution of Christians in the Middle East became world news. This essay reflects on the cultural and historical factors, which lay behind the west’s amnesia about Arab Christianity. It calls attention to how Arabic-speaking Christian theologians from early Islamic times onward responded to the religious challenge of Islam in Islam’s own Arabic idiom that seems to anticipate the interreligious dialogue that Nostra Aetate promotes.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
