The schism between these two churches resulted from political pressures that developed after two World Wars. The community was weakened by its deportation from its homeland in the Hakkari region (Turkey) to Iraq and by a lack of leadership. Although the leaders of both churches sought to heal the schism, they were frustrated by the wars that exhausted Iraq. Nevertheless, real unity is experienced when the churches help each other to overcome difficulties and to preserve their shared heritage. The strength of union already achieved at the grassroots level should inspire those in the hierarchy to continue their quest for reunion.
