Серия III: Филология4 [14]200863-68The article contains a historical and philological analysis (the first one in the history of Russian science) of a commented Arabic translation of the Book of Psalms belonging to a Nestorian priest and monk, physician and philosopher Abu-l-Faraj ‘Abdallah ibn at-Tayyib al-‘Iraqi. The analysis is based on the first part of the work (Pss. 1–81); the manuscript containing this text dates back to the 16th century and is deposited at the St Petersburg Branch of the Russian Institute of Oriental Studies (call number B 1216). Certain linguistic peculiarities of the manuscript, such as indiscriminate use of emphatic and non-emphatic consonants, of ‘ayn and alif, are characteristic of Neo-Assyrian, the speakers of which in their overwhelming majority are Nestorians. In all probability, Ibn at-Tayyib’s native language was one of the Eastern Aramaic dialects which was later to give rise to Neo-Assyrian. Some terms used in the commentary (e. g., al-mu‘tazila for the Pharisees or al-munafiq for an impious person) are indicative of the infl uence exercised upon the Nestorians by Islam. The contents of the commentary reveal a special interest for the semi-legendary history of Mosul and its vicinity which the author identifies as the ancient Assyria, the Babylonian exile and the Maccabean revolt.
