If all of Europe and many parts of the world were involved in the hostilities from 1914 to 1918, the connection between war and genocide took on a particularly brutal form in the heart of an old Ottoman Empire in decline : the fact of being at war allowed governments to implement their schemes for ethnic cleansing, aimed at ethnically and religiously "homogenizing" society, in making it completely Turkish and Moslem, as extremist nationalism required. In Anatolia, violence broke out against the Christians. The Armenian communities were targeted because of their supposed collaboration with the Russian enemy, resulting in the "first genocide of history". They were not alone. Syriac, Chaldean, Assyrian, Orthodox and Catholic communities were also singled out. This text analyses the bond between war and genocide synthetically, in studying most particularly the tragedy of Seyfo, which is little known and has been little commemorated over the decades. The ancient Syriac-Orthodox Church, and particularly Tur Abdin, its spiritual heart, paid a heavy tribute with its blood to the nationalist frenzy of the "young-Turks" government.
