Sometimes anti-Judaism in Syriac texts tells us something about the social context in which these texts were composed but it is often easier to engage in literary analysis and appreciate the symbolic role Jews play in this literature than to isolate a precise historical setting for such polemic. In some texts anti-Jewish passages seem to appear only because of the internal logic of the text and it is difficult to imagine an audience of Jews or a context of authentic Jewish-Christian debate. Furthermore, despite how harsh the polemic could at times be it is important that we distinguish this tradition of anti-Judaism from that of Western Christianity, which itself eventually contributed to the Holocaust.
