The author suggests a religious function. The caves were dedicated to the god Mithras. This was established because of the structure of the caves, the existence of a large meeting hall, probably for the celebration of community banquets, several niches in the walls and a great pool, as well as a stepped altar and a necropolis in the immediate vicinity. It may be the best preserved known Mithraeum.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
